When Polly Met Fergie: Peterborough's First Vegan Restaurant

It was serendipity that just as I exchanged contracts to move to the city, Peterborough’s first vegan restaurant When Polly Met Fergie opened. A week later I completed my house move and we headed straight there to celebrate.

When Polly Met Fergie: Peterborough's First Vegan Restaurant

Located in the Westgate Arcade, the main restaurant is located downstairs and has a relaxed cafe feel. Meanwhile upstairs there is a cocktail and jazz bar with regular live music. The decor certainly sets the mood with dark walls, a centrepiece chandelier and a grand piano in the corner.

I can only describe how good my first meal there was as my camera was still packed away in a box at home. I started with arancini balls served with a punchy tomato sauce, followed up with a rich and stewy red wine bourguignon. The accompanying dill mash was so smooth and pillowy that I cleaned my plate!

Oliver chose a nacho starter topped with a convincingly meaty fragrant ‘mince’. His main of ancho chilli, tortilla and rice was fresh and filling, but we both would have loved some kind of sauce with it to add a little moisture. We were very impressed overall and vowed to return.

No Ordinary Avo

When Polly Met Fergie: Peterborough's First Vegan Restaurant

Fast forward to a few weeks later and I popped in for breakfast. I’d been hoping to try their signature eggless benedict but it wasn’t on the menu that day. I’m glad in retrospect because the avocado on toast that I had instead was exceptional. The creamy avocado was generously piled atop a slice of fresh baked focaccia and given a sumptuous earthy, unami twist with the addition of truffles. For extra oomf, there were also sweet but tart sun dried tomatoes and toasted pine nuts. Definitely not your average avo!

When Polly Met Fergie’s Christmas Menu*

Maybe it’s over the top to visit the same restaurant three times in a month but hey, it’s not often that an entirely plant based restaurant launches a Christmas menu and welcomes you inside to taste it all is it?

I arrived with the other Qbloggers, eager not only to taste the new menu, but also to find out what my non vegan friends thought. The verdict was unanimous: whether you’re vegan, vegitarian, flexitarian or a carnivore, this is food everyone will love!

In a Christmas menu full of highlights, I’ll give a special mention to the potato dauphinoise. I haven’t tasted anything so creamy and cheddary since I gave up those very things! My friends said that if they’d walked in off the street and eaten this without knowing that they were in a plant based restaurant, they’d be none the wiser.

Also, it’s an absolute pleasure to have a choice of multiple vegan desserts, something rather lacking when visiting other restaurants. Here, the festive option of a berry crumble with vanilla cream ticked all the boxes for me. It was warming, fruity and homely.

“It’s just honest plates of fresh food that are aromatic and full of flavour. They just all happen to be plant based.”

I can’t express how good it feels to finally have a place in my hometown where I can walk in and have the freedom to order anything I like off the menu. Peterborough’s first vegan restaurant has arrived just in time to make my Christmas!

The thing with When Polly Met Fergie though is that it isn’t ‘gimmicky’. It isn’t trying to convince everyone to go vegan with a menu full of meat substitutes. It doesn’t even make a big deal of it being a vegan restaurant! It’s just honest plates of fresh food that are aromatic and full of flavour. They just all happen to be plant based.

When Polly Met Fergie is situated at Westgate Arcade, Queensgate, Peterborough and can be accessed from inside or outside the shopping centre.

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

“You’re vegan? But… what about Christmas?”

The classic question! Personally, I don’t miss any of the traditional festive dinners half as much as I expected to. I do however feel a bit left out when it comes to all of the festive sweet treats that get passed around. Whether it’s after dinner chocolates, a festive tipple or a selection box of chocolates, I usually have to politely decline.

Luckily the high street is starting to get on board with the growing demand for vegan friendly sweets, chocolates and edible gifts. I attended a Christmas taster evening at Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough last week and was absolutely chuffed at how much they had to show me. I even got to have not one, but TWO festive meals, all entirely vegan.

With that in mind, I’ve rounded up some of the best vegan friendly christmas treats and gifts available on the high street this year and where to buy them.

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats

For watching Christmas movies in your pj’s…

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

Vegan Vanilla Marshmallows | The Naked Marshmallow Co | Lakeland

Vegan marshmallows! My goodness how I’ve craved a super indulgent hot chocolate since going vegan, but until now I haven’t found a high street retailer that stocks vegan marshmallows. Finding these in Lakeland made my day!

After Dinner Treats

Still in Lakeland, I found these chocolate covered cherries which really are the perfect after dinner christmas treat. They are slightly sour with a dark chocolate coating and a lovely chewy inside. They come gift wrapped in cellophane so would make a nice gift to take round if you’re visiting someone else for Christmas.

Growing up, we always had a box of After Eight at Christmas. Sadly I checked and they aren’t vegan, but I discovered that Lakeland stock Beech’s After Dinner Mints which are a conscience free alternative and delicious in their own right.

For the Prosecco Lover

It’s almost time to start opening our advent calendars, but to be honest I have found the vegan chocolate ones I’ve tried hugely disappointing. For a fun alternative, Popaball have a ‘Pimp Your Prosecco‘ 12 day advent calendar containing 11 bubbles of different flavours and one shimmer.

For Impressive Christmas Gifts

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

I’ve always loved using Hotel Chocolat for gifts as everything is so beautifully packaged. Now I love them even more, because this year they have a huge vegan friendly selection that non vegans should adore just as much. You need to avoid the milk chocolate (obviously!) but as well as their dark chocolate range, many of their alcohols are also vegan (oh hello Salted Caramel Cocoa Vodka Liqueur).

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

Some of their Christmas sweets such as their Rose & Lemon Turkish Delight are vegan too – it’s worth checking the label or asking a member of staff for help if you’re not sure.

For A Buzzing Christmas Party

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

Once finished shopping for vegan friendly Christmas treats and gifts I also headed to Turtle Bay, Peterborough’s fun and lively Caribbean restaurant where the atmosphere is always buzzing. If you’re sick of Christmas music and want somewhere a little different for a festive get together, this place is a winner.

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts I tried the Spiced Chickpea Ital and Sweetcorn Fritters. Both were super tasty but be warned these are SPICY dishes that build heat over time. If you’re sensitive to spices, you might want to ask your waiter for guidance on how hot the dish is before you choose!

Vegan Friendly Christmas Treats and Gifts

If you have a Christmas party to organise, two courses from the Christmas Lunch menu are £14.95 and two courses from the Christmas Anytime menu are £19.95. You get a £20 gift card as a thank you for booking a table of 10 people or more (£50 gift card for tables over 30).

I have to thank Queensgate and their stores for once again being wonderful hosts and showing me that there are plenty of vegan friendly Christmas treats and gifts to enjoy this year!

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

A few years ago Queensgate shopping centre in Peterborough invited a handful of bloggers from the area to become #Qbloggers. I always look forward to our catch ups as they tend to involve lots of food, plenty of blog talk and tip sharing, as well as a few surprises.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

This season we were invited to a gathering at Carluccio’s Restaurant to participate in a secretive shopping challenge. Before we found out what it was, we tucked into delicious canapes (vegan friendly – yay for me!) and got the low down on what’s coming up at Queensgate over the coming months.

New At Queensgate for AW18

Firstly, The White Company are hosting a pop up in Queensgate until Christmas. YES QUEENSGATE! It’s handy shopping online when you know what you want, but there is a special kind of joy to be had from sniffing every single one of their glorious scents in store.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

Secondly, this coming Saturday the 17th November is the centre’s Festive Fiesta. The action starts at 10.30am and promises fun surprises and entertainment for shoppers throughout the day. I couldn’t tease any more details out of them but I’ve been told that they’ve gone big this year. Really big. Check out my Instagram stories on Saturday, I’m heading into the centre to find out for myself.

The AW18 #Qblogger Challenge

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

During the meal we were invited to open personalised envelopes containing our AW18 #Qblogger challenge. Mine revealed three stores handpicked to suit my individual style. The challenge was to visit them all and pick out my five favourite items for the Autumn/Winter season. To help me, I was given a £25 Queensgate gift card* to put towards my top pick which could be used at any retailer at the centre.

When I read out my three stores to visit everyone around the table said “Oh they are SO you Laura!” I’d been given Joules, John Lewis and Oasis. I couldn’t have chosen better myself. Here’s how I got on:

Joules

I tend to buy from Joules when I want something that’s high quality that I’ll get a lot of wear out of. They are especially good for cosy scarves, tailored coats and cute as a button wellies.

I fell in love with this plum coloured jacket which I thought would be a perfect addition to my capsule wardrobe.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

I really can’t stand being cold and find jackets a good solution as they can be slipped on and off as needed. It would work well with a shift dress for the office and then paired with jeans and a teeshirt for a more casual vibe.

Then I spotted a perfect Christmas present idea: the Wensley Scarf in the ‘Dogs In Leaves’ print.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

Since it’s got lots of different breeds on it I could think of several of my dog loving friends that would go gaga over it. That’s at least one present ticked off my Christmas list…

John Lewis

John Lewis is where I head when I need something for party season and they delivered for the AW18 #Qblogger challenge. This shimmering sequinned gold dress from French Collection caught my attention above all others.

Not only does it look fabulous, but owing to its flattering tunic cut it would also allow room for that inevitable festive food baby. SOLD.

Oasis

Finally, I arrived at Oasis which has fast become one of my favourite clothing brands. I find the cut of their clothes and the patterns and the fabrics used some of the most flattering on the high street.

This season I’m picking up a strong ‘Cher from Clueless’ vibe from their collection, in particular this preppy checked skirt.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

I think it would work just as well teamed with a cosy cable knit jumper as it would paired with something more tailored.

I also spotted this navy striped tee.

AW18 #QBlogger Challenge at Queensgate Shopping Centre

The fabric keeps it casual and comfortable but the addition of rose gold stars gives it a festive twist. It’s my pick to wear on Christmas day.

So that’s my ‘fab five’ from the retailers at Queensgate shopping centre for AW18. What do you think? And what’s caught your eye recently?

LovedByLaura

As a side note, sadly the Peterborough Carluccio’s closed down just after our visit. It’s a real shame as they had some delicious vegan friendly dishes. With the benefit of hindsight I wish I had visited more often; sometimes you don’t appreciate these things until they’re gone.

*This post is a collaboration with Queensgate. I received a £25 gift card as thanks for taking part in the AW18 #Qblogger challenge.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

I once spent an evening smashing and scoffing Easter Eggs in the name of a blog review and I thought that life couldn’t get any better. Oh how wrong I was! Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough topped it by inviting me to their headquarters to sample all of the festive food and drink the major retailers and restaurants have on offer this Christmas.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

It was a super fun evening and I discovered all sorts of delectable festive food and drink. I’ve whittled it down to my top picks below and have tried to include a little of bit of everything, from dinner party treats to Christmas Day must haves and even some festive restaurant menus too!

Warning: the following post contains an excessive amount of photographs of highly delicious food – reading on an empty stomach is not advised! 🙂

John Lewis

I’m going to start with alcoholic drinks because John Lewis have gone above and beyond this year!

First off, they have baubles containing Pickering’s Gin. Yes that’s right – gin! They look pretty enough to get away with being regular decorations, but unscrew the top and you have an instant tipple!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Keeping with the gin theme, how awesome does Unicorn Tears Gin Liqueur sound? The liquid is iridescent and shimmers as you swirl it in your glass to add to the festivities.

(I’ve been assured that no unicorns were harmed in the making of this product.)

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Food wise, if you eat in a John Lewis cafe this Winter you’ve got to try the Chocolate and Orange Cake! It’s like an amped up version of a Jaffa Cake Bar and the flavours are insanely good.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

If you’re not a big fan of chocolate orange they have a whole range of other cakes and slices too including millionaire shortbread and lemon drizzle. (I’ll repeat again though, you MUST try that chocolate orange cake!!!)

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Lakeland

Moving on to Lakeland, these guys take the prize for having some of the most fun and innovative treats this Christmas.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

My favourite find this year has been Lakeland’s Candy Cane Peppermint Bark – white and dark chocolate with minty candy cane shards sprinkled on top. It is just divine and totally moreish!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

There are actually four whole bars inside the pretty tin packaging so it would make a great gift to give you your hosts if you’re going somewhere for Christmas, or you could just as easily make four lovely presents from the chocolate bark by rewrapping each seperately in cellophane and ribbon, then keep the tin for yourself!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

I also made a beeline for their Rose Gold Shimmer Popaball For Prosecco because you should all know by now how much I love ANYTHING rose gold! Seriously though, at my friend Tiffany’s wedding earlier this year they had a ‘pimp your prosecco’ stand with some of this stuff and we all loved it.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Another great idea I picked up from Lakeland is to use a slow cooker for hot chocolate, something I’ve never thought of doing before but it makes perfect sense really! Rather than making individual servings that can go cold quick, you just make up a batch with hot chocolate and milk/dairy free alternative and keep it gently bubbling away to serve as and when needed. PLUS, Lakeland have only gone and made a hot chocolate version of the peppermint bark – hallelu!

Marks and Spencers

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

You can’t beat a good mince pie at Christmas and whenever I eat an M&S one I have to put on the voice and do the: “This isn’t just a mince pie, this is a MARKS AND SPENCERS mince pie!” quote because it’s true, they are always that extra bit delicious!

As always they have a massive amount of buffet style nibbles that promise a quality table spread. At our festive feast we were treated to turkey and cranberry sausage rolls and a seasonal sandwich selection with delicious sounding fillings such as Turkey Feast, Brie and Grape, Prawn and Smoked Salmon and Ham Hock and Golden Beetroot Piccalilli.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Ever one for pretty packaging however, my top picks are this beautiful Christmas cone filled with yummy shortbread biscuits that we made VERY short work of, and Gold Creme Brulee Liquer which I can imagine enjoying in front of the fire after Christmas dinner.

Some of the restaurants at Queensgate Shopping Centre had also sent along some of their festive menus for us to try on the night. Here’s a roundup of my favourites!

Carluccio’s

Carluccio’s have a Christmas menu available until the 3rd January with 2 Courses for £17.95 (or add £3 to include dessert). I can highly recommend the Pere e Gorgonzola, a starter of pears & gorgonzola served with radicchio, green beans and walnuts, tossed in a lemon dressing. It’s light and fresh and yet at the same time gave me all the festive feels.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

The Tomato Bruschetta was also absolutely delicious with slices of grilled ciabatta topped with fresh baby plum, yellow cherry and beef tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, baby basil and garlic. I want the recipe for the tomato dressing, it was so good!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

If you can fit in dessert the Coppa di Limoncello Mascarpone is another winner – mascarpone limoncello cream drizzled with limoncello syrup and served with raspberries, crumbled amaretto biscuits and mint.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

The Handmade Burger Kitchen

As someone about to transition to a plant based diet (read more on this here) I was absolutely delighted to see a festive vegan burger on the Handmade Burger Kitchen menu, the Veg-Mex. Well done guys, this made me extremely happy and gives me hope that once fully transitioned, I’ll still be able to enjoy Christmas meals out!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

It’s a veggie patty with handmade Mexican salsa, hand crushed avocado, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato & red onion and I tell you what, as someone who has eaten their fair share of meaty burgers, this one holds up against them! It has a bit of a kick to it, it’s packed full of flavours and textures and is extremely filling.

For the meat lovers there are PLENTY of festive burgers to choose from – the avocado and bacon burger seemed to go down a treat with the non veggie bloggers!

Pret A Manger

Pret are also complete stars in my book this year for putting out a vegetarian Christmas lunch consisting of roasted chunks of butternut squash, spicy rocket and nutty Christmas pesto made with walnuts and pecans. It’s served with a spoonful of yoghurt & mayo dressing and a sprinkling of crispy onions on malted bread.

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Excuse the blurred picture of Melvin The Melted Snowman but isn’t he so fun? Made with a marshmallow head, a puddle of icing and a gingerbread cookie base, he was adorably cute but not enough to stop me giving in to temptation and scoffing him before I managed to get a decent photo!

Hotel Chocolat

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

Hotel Chocolat assortments are always epic and The Christmas Gift Box is no exception with 42 of the finest truffles, pralines and caramels to choose from. Each chocolate in the selection is so beautifully detailed with little extra elements such as a crunchy topping for the Treacle Tart and a liquid centre for Mulled Wine, ensuring that there are no duds in this box! My favourites are the ever classic Champagne Truffle and the Christmas Mess!

Grasmere Farms

Last but by no means least, the artisan family butchers at Grasmere Farms had provided a selection of freshly handmade sausage rolls, pork pies and scotch eggs (including a ham and scotch egg version) for us to enjoy. I didn’t partake (being the awkward veggie at the party!) but I know that a lot of you enjoy a good sausage roll so I’ll pass on the other blogger’s comments and tell you that these were exceptional!

Queensgate Festive Food and Drink This Christmas

For anyone local to Peterborough you can find them in Queensgate’s Westgate Arcade but a good selection of their produce is now available online for those of you further afield too.

So there you have it – my 2017 Festive Food and Drink Roundup! My thanks go to the wonderful hospitality of Queensgate Shopping Centre and all of the lovely stores who plied me with food and drink all evening!

Have you spotted anything here that takes your fancy for Christmas?

LovedByLaura

*Disclaimer: As noted above I attended an event held by Queensgate Shopping Centre to sample the festive food and drink available in stores this year. I was not paid for this post and all items selected are hand picked by me because I absolutely loved them! (In the case of meat items I was given reliable reviews from my fellow bloggers on the night!).

Going ‘Out Out’ with a Queensgate AW17 Fashion Challenge

Last week I headed to my local shopping centre Queensgate Peterborough to take part in a mystery challenge. The details had been kept top secret  so all I knew beforehand was that upon arrival at Hotel Chocolat I’d receive further instructions. Verrrry intriguing!

Going ‘Out Out’ with a Queensgate AW17 Fashion Challenge

At Hotel Chocolat I found some of my blogging friends had already arrived and we were eager to find out just what Queensgate had got in store for us. We made our way to the counter where the lovely manager handed each of us a sealed envelope with our name on it and the most decadent hot chocolate that I’ve had the pleasure to drink!

Going ‘Out Out’ with a Queensgate AW17 Fashion Challenge

It’s their Halloween special edition and let me tell you, if you are a fan of the infamous Pumpkin Spiced Latte then this is going to blow your mind! Made with salted caramel, real chocolate flakes, lashings of cream and a chocolate vampire on top, nothing beats a Hotel Chocolat Hot Chocolate!

…but trust me to start a fashion post talking about food, let me reveal the challenge I’d been given!

The Queensgate Qblogger AW17 Challenge

Inside my envelope I found a £100 Gift Card redeemable at all stores in Queensgate shopping centre and the following instructions:

“Laura, you have a Christmas night out with the girls, involving dinner and cocktails. You haven’t all got together in ages so it is set to be a great night and the plan is to go “out out”. Use your gift card to buy yourself a killer outfit with the perfect amount of sparkle to dazzle when you walk in to the room!”

Going ‘Out Out’ with a Queensgate AW17 Fashion Challenge

The small print confirmed that I had just 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete my Queensgate AW17 challenge – no mean feat! I decided that for an ‘Out Out’ outfit I should look for luxurious textural fabrics such as velvet and silk with bold, sparkling accessories.

Saying a hasty goodbye and good luck to each of my friends who had all been issued with their own unique challenges I rushed off, deciding that John Lewis would be my first port of call.

John Lewis

John Lewis is one of the places I like to shop at when I’m looking for something a bit special. It’s home to some of my favourite designers including Somerset by Alice Temperley, Whistles, Coast and Ted Baker, all of whom tend to put up collections full of feminine, fabulous dresses.

I’m not very good at shopping at speed though so I was very grateful when Senna, the clothing manager at John Lewis spotted me and asked if she could help. I explained what I was looking for and my £100 budget and she straight away said she had something in mind.

“I think this would be perfect for you!” she said two minutes later brandishing a gorgeous floor length, metallic, pleated dress from Tommy Hilfiger. I am only five foot tall with a bit of a ‘short girl’ complex and thought it seemed like a total long shot, but to my amazement when I tried it on I knew straight away that my search was over – it was absolutely perfect!

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping Challenge

The only issue was that the spaghetti straps were too long but Senna used bobby pins to adjust the dress and show me how it would sit if they were shortened which was incredibly helpful. Even better, the dress was reduced from £205 to £61.50 and so sat perfectly within my budget!

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping Challenge

I’ve always shied away from accepting assistance when looking for clothes but after such a positive experience I’d be much more confident about enlisting the help of an in store personal shopper now. Not only did Senna have a great eye for what would suit me but she was also fully versed on what was in their sale and the sizes they had in stock which really helped to cut down time trying to locate something within my budget. Well done John Lewis I’m impressed!

The Perfect Biker Jacket at New Look

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping Challenge

With £48.50 left to spend I decided that I’d try and find a jacket, if possible in a biker style to soften the overall look and stop it from being too formal. I made a beeline for New Look as they have a good Petite section which actually fits me! They didn’t have any that stood out this time though and I thought I was going to have to move on to another store… until I spotted this little beauty.

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping Challenge

A buttery soft faux leather biker style jacket in a beautiful shade of green that I thought would make a nice contrast against the gun metal grey of the dress.

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping Challenge

Queensgate QBlogger AW17 Shopping ChallengeI have a slight confession. It was in 915; aka the children’s section! Sometimes when you’re petite it’s worth a look as every so often there’s a real gem to be found. Age 12-13 tends to fit me quite well in jackets and at £29.99 I still had a little bit of money left in the kitty too.

Finishing touches on a budget at Claire’s Accessories!

With just £8.51 remaining I decided to finish off the outfit with some statement earrings and found these in Claire’s Accessories for just £6. I think they work rather well!

…and with that I’d run out of time and money, but I think I did rather well! I had managed to find a versatile jacket, a stunning designer dress AND some well priced accessories for my £100 and now I can’t wait to have that “out out” evening!

In the meantime, I settled for a relaxed evening with the rest of the bloggers at Turtle Bay… watch out for more on that coming up in a post very soon!

Many thanks go to Queensgate Shopping Centre for setting such a fun challenge for AW17 and allowing me to keep my purchases. I only wish I could have made it down some of the boutique stores in their beautiful Westgate Arcade but time got the better of me. Oh well… I’ll just have to have another shopping trip there soon, won’t I?!
