The Diet Can Wait | Creams Cafe Peterborough

Regular readers will know by now that I have a ridiculously sweet tooth. But if you’re new here, let me introduce myself. “Hi, I’m Laura. Sugar makes me happy!” I therefore readily accepted an invitation to check out a newly opened dessert parlour in my home city of Peterborough called Creams Cafe.

A big plus for Creams Cafe over most of the other dessert venues in Peterborough is that it’s so centrally located. It’s just around the corner from Queensgate Shopping Centre’s John Lewis exit and a 2 minute walk from the Cathedral Square, so it really couldn’t be easier to get to.

The decor is distinctive and a reflects the food style which is: ‘Classic Italian Gelato Parlour Meets Modern American Diner’. Exposed brickwork, Italian artwork and chandeliers are juxtaposed against glossy black surfaces, LED lights and leather. Somehow it all works though!

If the view of the desserts being made behind the counter doesn’t make you salivate then the huge glass fronted cabinets full of tempting desserts and row after row of gelato flavours will! There’s also a photo booth and boxes available for takeaways/leftovers.

There’s also a spacious upstairs too if you want to tuck yourself away, which is what we chose to do.

Now let’s talk about those desserts! This place isn’t about ‘dainty’, it’s more of a ‘go big or go home’ kind of place. (In fact since my last visit they’ve brought out some special Halloween Freak Shakes, to which I say ‘SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY’).

Here’s what I’ve tried on my visits so far (yes – I’ve been more than once – I did say I love dessert!):

First, an ice cream sundae topped with crumbly fudge pieces and lashings of caramel sauce. Sometimes my eyes are far bigger than my belly and although this was utterly delicious I could only manage half myself.

The crepes were easier to polish off in a single sitting! Unlike the tough cardboard ones that I ate recently at St Pancras Station, these were soft and just the right thickness. I chose the raspberry and white chocolate version which satisfied my sweet tooth exceedingly well, although there are plenty of other options to choose from.

My standout dessert though had to be the waffles with brownies. I love the ones that I make in my waffle iron at home, but they are nowhere near as light and fluffy as the ones I had at Creams. The consistency reminded me almost of the fresh warm doughnuts that you get at the seaside. Basically I now have extreme waffle envy.

I would say that most of the desserts are so decadent that I think you could get away with two people sharing a portion… but I’ll leave that to your discretion!
