It hasn’t escaped my attention that the 90’s are now back in a big way. Chokers, all black everything, tees under slips and ankle boots. This is one fashion trend that I can most definitely get on board with!
Somewhat depressingly I was around the first time this trend was in, though back then I had very little money and no sense of personal style. If you’ve watched Stranger Things, then think of Barb. That was me. I even had my hair short for a time after seeing a really lovely cut in a magazine, the only problem was that my mum wouldn’t let me use any styling products in my hair so I ended up looking like an early Justin Bieber. I suppose you could say I was ahead of the times fashionably speaking. (No actually you really couldn’t!)
Anyway now that the 90’s are back in I decided it was time for a do-over, so when I spotted a little pinafore dress on the summer sale rack at Miss Selfridge for under a tenner I snapped it up. It’s perfect for this time of year as it can be easily transformed by layering things under it. I’ve worn it under a crisp white shirt at work for a preppy look paying homage to Rachel in Friends, but decided to amp up the grunge when I recently attended the Scarlett London Bloggers Festival in London.
Usually I’d keep my jewellery minimal but for this look I decided that more is more and that clashing was fine! My skull necklace had come very close to getting chucked out as I never wear it anymore, but I layered it with a choker kindly lent to me by Pippa and teamed it with my chunkiest black ring and a bit of sparkle in the form of a diamante heart bracelet that my mum had given me. (Despite the whole Barb hair debacle we’ve remained close!)
Make up wise I kept with the 90’s and went for a nude lip. My favourite is still Nars Audacious in Vanessa.
I was a bit nervous to wear it as I’m usually such a girly girl when it comes to my clothes and don’t tend to try and make any kind of statement, but I got a few compliments on the day which made me feel a bit braver! Unfortunately my necklace kept catching on the material of my dress and one boob of it is all bobbled so I’m not sure if I can salvage it. However now that I know that I can wear them I’ll be more confident about trying on similarly styled dresses.
Other than my bargain dress, everything that I wore was something I already owned. Sometimes it’s worth experimenting with what’s already in your wardrobe – layering pieces over or under others until you find a winning combination. It can totally transform individual pieces and give them a while new lease of life, and it might surprise you what ends up working well together. Try long and short sleeved tops under dresses as the season cools.
