Guys, a terrible thing has happened. It was National Waffle Day yesterday and I missed it. Aargh! I blame it on a case of Great British Bake Off fever. On the bright side though, today (25th August) is National Burger Day and I’m more than ready for this one!
I love making home made burgers. They are really quick to put together and you can use beef, lamb or pork meat. Add in some sauce, spices, vegetables, fruit or cheese and you can create an endless supply of fresh, epic tasting burgers that put supermarket frozen ones to shame.
French’s have very kindly offered to send one lucky reader a gift box of their awesome sauces (competition below) so I thought in honour of the occasion I’d create and share a new burger recipe featuring one of my favourites from the range. I give to you….
Juicy Jalapeno Pork Burgers!
* 175g Pork Sausagemeat
* 1 1/4 tbsp Panko Breadcrumbs
* 1 tsp Flour
* 1/2 tsp French’s Texan Jalapeno Tomato Relish*
* 2 Slices of Cheese (I used Emmental)
* Rocket (for dressing)
* 1 tbsp olive oil (for dressing)
* 2 Burger Buns
* 1 Jacket Potato (washed)
* 1/4 tbsp Smoked Paprika
* 1 tbsp Olive Oil
* Salt and Pepper
Preheat your oven to 220 degrees celcius and whilst it’s warming up, chop your potato in half lengthways, then cut it into rustic style wedges or chips. Toss these in the olive oil, paprika, a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper.
Spread out your chips onto a baking tray lined with a bit of greaseproof paper and cook them in the top of the oven for about 25 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix the sausagemeat, breadcrumbs, flour, jalapeno sauce and a pinch of salt together in a bowl.
Divide the mixture into two even portions, then roll each into a ball and carefully pat out into a patty. My tip is to make sure that they are nice and flat and a little bit thinner than a cooked burger would be, because they will contract and fatten up during cooking and can otherwise come out a bit small.
Add 1 tbsp olive oil to a frying pan on a medium-high heat and once it’s nice and hot, add in your burger patties. Cook them on the first side for 6 to 7 minutes. Whilst these are sizzling away, cut your burger buns in half and preheat a second hob and frying pan.
When ready, turn over your burgers and cook them for another 5 minutes, then add a tsp of water to the frying pan, pop a slice of cheese on each burger and then cover the pan for a further two minutes. The moisture will help the cheese melt over the burger.
As your cheese turns to a wonderful gooey mess, pop your buns face down in the other frying pan for a minute on each side to to toast them slightly.
Meanwhile, grab a few handfuls of rocket, drizzle over a little bit of oil and season with a pinch of salt.
Now all you have to do is assemble your dinner!
Layer your burger bun with some of the dressed rocket, then the cheese topped burger, a bit more rocket and any sauces you want to add (I went for more of the Jalapeno on mine!).
At this point if you want to add any extras like a slice of tomato, lettuce etc, you have free reign! Add the bun top to your burger and serve with a helping of the paprika chips.
So how about winning a bumper box of sauces then, like this one?
