Valentine’s Day Ideas / Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Looking for ideas for Valentine’s Day? Want something that looks great and shows that you’ve made an effort, whilst secretly being incredibly quick and easy to put together? (Don’t worry – I won’t tell anyone!).

Well look no further – you need some chocolate covered strawberries in your life!

They are incredibly simple, yet fun to make. Why not put them in a crisp white box wrapped with ribbon to make a thoughtful handmade gift.

I do have to warn you that you may get covered in chocolate in the process and be overcome by the temptation to lick the bowl!

Read on for how to make these little beauties!

What you need:

A punnett of juicy red strawberries
A small bar of chocolate (or two – I used milk and white)
Cocktail sticks

Instructions:

  • Skewer your strawberries with the cocktail sticks.

  • Half fill a bowl or saucepan with boiling water, than rest a smaller bowl in it to make a ‘bain marie’ (fancy term for a water bath!).
  • Put your chocolate in the bowl and gently stir until it has all melted. You don’t need too much, but the more you melt, the easier it will be to dip your strawberries.
  • Add a small drizzle of olive oil and stir it through (this makes the chocolate gorgeously shiny and gives it just the right consistency!)
  • Dip each strawberry into the chocolate and give it a twirl until it has a nice even coating.

  • You can either rest the strawberries on a plate, or if you want them evenly coated all the way around, find something to rest the cocktails sticks in. I have a little glass rose bowl which did the job perfectly.

  • For the love of all things pretty, grate a little white chocolate over each strawberry.

  • Note that grated chocolate goes everywhere and melts in your hands if you try to catch it, so this will make a glorious chocolately mess!
  • Alternatively you could dip them in hundreds and thousands, or drizzle them with melted white chocolate, or roll them in little marshmallows… okay I’ll stop now, I want to make some more!
  • To finish, refrigerate the strawberries for at least 30 minutes.

Now all that’s left to do is share them with someone you love!
(Even if it’s your cat and you kindly eat them on your cat’s behalf – it’s the thought that counts).
